It was my second time of attending Hawaii International Film Festival. I was actually more exciting than last years Hawaii International Film Festival. Even though those movies were not Hollywood movie, people were interested and come to feel foreign movies. I watch two different movies, which are Bunker77 and Your Name. I decided to watch movie that made by Japanese because I am from Japan and wanted to see how people react to the movie from different prospective.
First movie that I watch was Bunker77. I believe I’m the only one HPU student who watched this movie. I choose this movie because main character Bunker is known for legendary cult surfer in early 60s to late 70s. Also a Japanese professional surfer also a director Takuji Masuda directed this movie. Takuji took 12 years to finish up this movie. The content was about true story documentary of famous actor Clark Gable’s stepson Bunker Spreckles. It was really impressive to see one of the professional surfer’s lives before surfing became social sports. Bunker was involving surfing but then, he addicted to drugs and having too much fun to play with girls. He passed away only 27years old. The theater showing this movie was small but packed by many local legend surfers. I was really surprised that. Second movie was Your Name, which was a romantic Japanese anime, revolves two young main characters. The reason why I chose to watch this movie is because I’ve heard this movie came out few months earlier in Japan and already has a lot of good reviews. Also because ticket for first two screening was sold-out within few ours after start selling, I was really interested in why many people hoping to see this movie. Even though the story is simple and language is Japanese, I get deeply in to the movie because a lot of depth added while story goes on. I really like it and I would like to watch this movie again. The whole HIFF was fantastic. People in Hawaii do not have any chance to feel foreign movie as much as other States even though there is lot of travelers around. People work together to make is happened and I was really impressed by it. This year would not be my last film festival to attend! . For the second movie, I chose to watch “HIKAWA MARU-氷川丸ものがたり -”. It was a Sunday afternoon show and the theater was fully packed with people hoping to see this Japanese anime movie. HIKAWA MARU ”氷川丸ものがたり“ the Japanese original title of this film “HIKAWA MARU” is a Japanese animation movie that is directed by Shunji Oga. Shunji Oga is the most remarkable Japanese animation movie director in the world. The movie came out last summer in Japan and had good reviews. I usually do not watch anime movies and I am not a fan of anime, but it was quite different from other movies and I was really excited to watch this movie.
The main character 13 years old young boy Jiro Hirayama has lost his mother Great Kanto Earthquake and was helping noodle vendor that runs by his father. One day, Jiro decide to work as one of the crews on ocean liner Hikawa maru. Jiro was able to find the position at cook room. Through Jiro’s perspective, film shows 85yers long history of the Hikawa maru. The movie has four different time periods in the story. The first story setting was before the World War Two happens. Hikawa maru was in the service between Yokohama and Seattle as passenger ship. The second story is after the war started. Hikawa Maru was running as a hospital ship. The third story setting was after the war and ship run as cargo and passenger ship. I was really impressed by the theme of this movie, which is a sense of peace. Throughout the story, the movie is showing memory of the war, the appeal of the ocean, preciousness of peace, severity of the jobs on the ship to the audiences. I recommend you to watch this movie when you have a chance. I chose a Japanese movie that is called “Twisted Justice ” for the my first day of the Hawaii International Film festival that was Saturday November 12. Twisted Justice(the original title is 日本で一番悪い奴ら–Nihonde ichiban warui yatsura) is a Japanese crime comedy drama movie, that was directed by Kazuya Shiraishi and written by Junya Ikegami. The story is set in Hokkaido, Susukino that is most northern and second largest island of Japan. Everything is based on the real story that is biggest scandal in history of Japanese Police department.
The main character Yoichi Morohosi is hired by Hokkaido Police department as a detective based on his strength and experiences of Judo skills that he trained during his college days. Even though he has huge sense of justice, he had been having hard time at work. One day, Yoichi was told good advice of the police business from his not only the colleague but also one of the best detectives Murai. The advice changed Yoichi’s game. He started belong with underground world and use them as spy. Just following all advice and trying to eradicate them by the below standard way of investigation. This movie came out about five months earlier in Japan and already had some good reviews. Even though the story is Japanese, it was hard to predict what would happen, but I can tell you the reasons why this movie has good reviews. My favorite thing about this movie is how the director expresses true story in the movie. I recommend you to watch this movie when you have a chance. 1, Could you introduce your self to the common? Sure, my name is Victoria Verleysen but I go by Tori because it’s way too proper. I am 21 and majoring integrated multimedia. 2,How did you get your name? My sister picked my first name and I don’t know how I got lest of my name. 3,Where are you originally from? I’m from Maryland. 4, Do you like Hawaii or mainland better? I would have to say neither because Hawaii has way too many cockroaches. Maryland, I live there too long. Just boring, need change. 5,Have you been to any other place other than Hawaii and mainland? I have been to majority of the east coast Alaska Hawaii Texas. Also been to England Scotland France and Japan. 7.Where have you gone to and what did you do there? To see families or sightseeing. 8,Where are your favorite place? Which places do you like a lot? I could not pick one because I like all for different reasons. Everywhere is equal. 9,Where do you plant to go to in the future? I want to go to every states continent and country in the world including Antarctica. 10, Antarctica? How much is it to go there? It’s about ten thousand dollar just for ticket. Arigatou!! Hello, It’s going to be my first posting.
My name is Kaito Orihara. I am 23 years old. I was born and grew up in Tokyo. Like you all, I love ocean, surfing, and doing crazy things with my friends. My hobby is surfing. I love it and my favorite one. I began surfing when I was 13 or 14. I’ve been living in Hawaii for the past six years. Hawaii is fantastic place to me because waves are always good and I don’t need to wear wetsuits when I go surf. hajimemashite! |
